Practical Information

Before coming over:

  • Make sure your smartphone plan has roaming, and that the roaming is on. Do check the roaming costs with your local provider.
  • Exchange some money into PLN ahead of coming – it will help you with early expenses.

After arrival:

  • You may want to use a Polish phone number. Consider buying a Polish sim card at the airport once you arrive.
  • If you did not exchange the currency into PLN yet – do exchange some at the airport. Be advised that the rates are suboptimal, so do not exchange large amounts.

Public transportation:

  • Don’t try using the metro/buses/trams without having a ticket – verification systems are quite efficient, and you will get fined.
  • Public transportation tickets can be bought at most kiosks, as well as vending machines. A few of them are available at the airports and train stations. Always remember to stamp the ticket right after boarding the bus, tram or metro.
  • Jakdojade - a Polish app with English menu is quite helpful for buying tickets and checking public transportation schedule. You can download the app at http://www.jakdojade.pl, via Google Play or App Store.

Discounts:

  • You may get your student card at WUT – it will allow you to pay a reduced fare for public transportation in Warsaw (and many other places).
  • A student ID works elsewhere, too - most restaurants have special discounts for students (valid after showing your student card). The same applies to bars, museums, cinemas, theatres, etc.

Accommodation:

  • Typically, Warsaw offers many possibilities for students’ accommodation. The fastest way to secure your spot is to join student Facebook groups to find some shared flats and other information. You may also wish to visit the WUT Accommodation offer.
  • When signing a contract, do remember to read the agreement!
